Hurrah for July 2013!

July was a whole bag of surprises. A month of reversals, upheavals and profound choices. We even had a monkey attack or two. It was the Game of Thrones of months: nothing was safe, nothing was sacred and the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. Here's how it went down:

1. New job from Training to Operations
I’ve made a promotional transfer to an Exporting Company. Sad as I was leaving my old company, I just had to take this risk and opportunity to grow for the advancement of my career. It offers fresh challenges, more creativity, more flexibility and more responsibility. I love Training and I know I’ll go back to it some day, but the excitement of operations strategy was too much to pass up. Galleon Trading International is new in the Philippines and an expanding international export/import company. Therefore, a lot has to be done which might take me out of the country next month for both business and pleasure. :)
Wow, magkakabusiness card na ako.  :)
Turning my can'ts into cans and my dreams into plans.

2. Bali Trip
Cue those angry monkeys and HOT Aussie surfers, sea-weathered carvings and sun-weathered bikini tan lines. My sojourn to that sacred/profane beach near completes my right of passage through the most beloved beaches on earth. Keep the champagne flowing, Bali because your temples are even more beautiful than your famous sunsets.

3. Bucketlist: Ride an Elephant
Whether meeting Princess Jasmine or invading Gondor, the elephant is my mount of choice. I’ve always wanted to ride the majestic beasts, and my trip to Bali gave me my chance to let the gentle giant carry me off. After riding this beautiful creature and learning more about the cruelty behind this practice, I've decided that this will be the first and last time I'll ride an elephant.

4. New Hair
Neat is nice and nice is neat, so I made the switch from Ombre Blonde to Strawberry Blonde, for a lighter, brighter ‘do that shines in the sun. It’s a radiant, uniform look, that pleases both Mark and the crowds.
AM and PM

5. Dates with friends
Share the love motherfuckas! College may be over, the party (not so much of a party really, just a jamming session until 3AM) continues. Seeing my friends always gives me that shot of youthful vivacity, to spruce up a Corporate Day.
Bi-polar: Corporate Life and Social Life. Corporate Life: So demure, prim and proper (chos). Social Life: Felt like rockstars until 3AM.
6. Game of Thrones Graphic Novel Volume 2
As graphic as it gets from a kick-ass iron throne, to a younger, frolicking cast. Beware The Others! Thank you so much, Joel for surprising me with this!

7. Downton Abbey
Lord Grantham invited me to stay. Carson reprimanded me and Lady Mary’s eyebrows quivered with suspicion. I came for Mrs. Patmore’s dinners, but I stayed for the Dowager Countess’ cutting lines. If you’re not watching Downton Abbey, you may be as radical as the chauffeur, Branson, because, well, nothing beats upstairs/downstairs period pieces chronicling the decline of the British Aristocracy. Good show, old boy.

I LOVE MAGGIE SMITH as the Dowager Countess!

The costumes are to die for! If only I can say I watch it ONLY for the costumes, but hey, Downton is a really good show.

8. Shingeki No Kyojin
Masaka! The latest, greatest anime to capture my heart and puzzle my mind and inspire my inner artist. This medieval, apocalyptic thriller is Evangelion meets the Walking Dead, in a more stylish, surreal form. A true subversion of the genre, with more than a nod and a wink to its past, Attack on Titan is the best thing to hit animated screens since...well, I don’t know quite remember when.
HOLY CRAP LIVE ACTION.

If you're planning on watching the anime or reading the manga, prepare for this kind of violence--and this is the tamest I could find.

9. Levi
I don't know how to describe his appeal but I'm really, really attracted to cool-headed leaders with superb fighting skills. JUST WATCH THE ANIME.

 This is not-so Levi as you know, he's a neat freak.
That's about it I think!
My August will be full of reports, traveling and felxi time. Ha!
Hello August, love you lots and see you next year, July!
x

Restaurant Review: Vanilla Cupcake Bakery

 Fancy cupcakes and muffins have been the treat du jour for much of the 2010s. Cakes are too filling, bran muffins too unsatisfying. The solution was obvious: petite sugary snacks that appeal to the eye as much as the tastebuds.

Since its inception, the movement seems to have fallen into three camps: Haute dessert flavours crammed into the muffin (think creme brûlée flavored), traditional varieties elevated to a higher level (straight-up lemon or chocolate chip) and the all-decor, no flavour category.
Vanilla Cupcake happily falls between the first two, serving up scrumptious red velvet, salted caramel and cheesecake hybrids and refined classics like lemon, a rich chocolate chip and a quirky strawberry lemon. However, that’s just a morsel of the flavours on offer, all of them decked out in a kaleidoscope of colors, so pretty, you may not want to eat them.

The ambience matches the food on offer, with retro pinks, blues and yellows that are as sweet and adorable as the cupcakes themselves. The aesthetic approach is Japanese-Lolita meets 1950s diner pastiche, meets Alice in Wonderland at Tea. The faux-garden with bright furniture would be a delight if weren’t so damned hot right now, but the quirky couches and chairs offer more than enough entertainment on the inside. Here’s hoping they keep the decor as cute as it is now, without going down the rockstar mid-life crisis renovation Heaven & Eggs went through.
A variety of western café food is also on offer, so a full meal is definitely on the table, if you’re hungry. Hearty spaghetti with meatballs, buffalo chicken with garlic fries and an all-day breakfast menu provides a solid menu for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with the sort of menu that Heaven & Eggs in Glorietta 4 is spruiking, only thankfully, healthier. And if you’re not into cupcakes, have the banoffee or strawberry panna cotta or a crushed cucumber, lemon and mint cooler served in a funky jar. It’s good for what ales ‘ya.

Presentation is everything, so the staff do a brisk trade in porting the goods on colorful china and glass goblets with all the pleasantries. From packaging to desserts, Vanilla Cupcake may just be the cutest thing to land in ATC.
Don’t Say: But they’re just mini-cakes. That’s girly.
Do Say: I came for the cupcakes, I stayed for the All-Day Breakfast menu.

What: Vanilla Cupcake Bakery
Where:
Level M1, inside Kamiseta Store, Trinoma Mall, Quezon City
2/F Trinoma Mall, Edsa corner, North Avenue, Quezon City
2/F Glorietta 4 Ayala Center, Makati City
Upper Ground Level, Corte de las Palmas, Alabang Town Center
Average dining cost: P100-200

Pros:
* Full menu, not just cupcakes.
* That said, awesome cupcakes
* Great selection of drinks
* A real - real coffee machine that pulls espresso shots
* Gorgeous decor
* Gorgeous plating

Cons:
* It’s small, so if you’re a big group, fight to get that couch!
* Weekends are packed, so hang around for an opportune moment
* Not enough people are tucking into the savoury meals - they’re good and people are missing out. You can stuff yourself with cupcakes after a pesto dip!

Gion, Kyoto

Graced with colored lights and at the confluence of the Shirakawa and Kamo rivers, the medieval Geisha district rolls on as it has for centuries, where wooden machiya hosting traditional tea houses, haute cuisine kaiseki-ryōri and maiko in-training have entertained samurai and now businessmen.

Richly decorated and frozen in time, Gion is a living museum. Every detail has been preserved from turn of the century postboxes to the cobbled streets and red lanterns. Were it not for the roaring taxis and flash photography, one would be instantly transported to a Japan of old. If you’re lucky, you may even glimpse a Maiko or Geisha in full regalia, rushing to her next appointment. As fabled as a unicorn, their presence renders audible gasps from onlookers around. Just don’t use flash photography and you may get yourself a snap of Japan’s most famous profession, beyond the salaryman.

The Japanese have long held the tradition of entertaining guests outside the house, so if you’re looking for a tea ceremony, an excellent meal with local delecacies, hewn from seasonal produce, or even entertainment from a Geisha, then Gion is the place to live-out your Memoirs of a Geisha/Anime/Japanophile fantasies.
So get over here and sake-to-me, baby.

Hello Update!!!

Worship the sun on top of Kuta Heritage Hotel.
I'm so sorry for not updating this blog! I just arrived from Indonesia around 2PM and I just wanted to rest the whole day. Still, I know it's time to start writing again when my mother (yes my mother), asked me about a blog update. Apparently, she's been reading my blog religiously. Thank you, ma! It seems that when work becomes incredibly hectic, you can just be too exhausted to use FB, upload pics or even blog. Anyway, here are some of the things that kept me busy:

  • New work, resignation and another new work as a manager (finally!)
  • Another medical procedure for my recovery
  • Downton Abbey Marathon and True Blood
  • Movie marathons
  • Spent time with my loved ones
  • Preparation for my Bali trip
  • Bali trip
Walked all the way from the temple to here. I believe the future is bright for the young and the brave.
I have more than a thousand photos lined up from all my dates last July and of course, all my memory files in Bali. Here are some of the nice ones I got. There are also at least 5 backlogs in my Drafts for this blog and a major project for an international company. August is gonna be busy. Hopefully, I'll be out of the country again next month for holiday and business.

I will update this blog this week!
Ciao!
