Affordable Skin Care Regimen for Starters

Skin is the living, breathing diary of your entire life. Every line, wrinkle and scar tells a visual story. How your skin looks speaks volumes about how you live your life. Whether you’re applying for a job or venturing out on a first date, it’s important to present yourself as a healthy and responsible individual. 

Here is a simple and affordable skin care regimen for starters. Asian women apply up to 9 products on their face at night sans toners, make up removers and facial wash. I'm only asking you to use 6 all in all.

 Etude House Lemon Tea Time/Aloe Tea Time P198 

STEP 1 REMOVE ALL YOUR MAKE UP
Make-up, late nights and sunny days at the beach should all be enjoyed; but they take a toll on your body’s armor. I've never, ever slept with my make-up on. It's the unhealthiest thing to do to your skin. Always remove everything on your face to let your skin breathe and repair damaged cells while you sleep. I use lip and eye make-up remover since I always wear eyeliner and lipstick, then I remove the rest of my make-up with Lemon Tea Time or Aloe Tea Time cream from Etude House. It's a lot easier to wash your face after using these make-up removers.

Tip:
If you want a cheaper make-up remover, you can buy it at Etude, Maybelline or Everbilena for less than P200. Sometimes, when I run out of make-up remover, I use baby oil to remove my eye make-up. It's safe and works well.

STEP 2 CLEANSE YOUR FACE WITH FACIAL WASH/FACIAL CLEANSERS
A good facial cleanser that suits your skin type is a must for everyone except maybe 10 year old kids and below. Try different products and see what works for you whether you have oily, dry, combination or sensitive skin. Before Neutrogena, I used L'Oreal facial cleanser for 6 years (more or less) and I alternated it with Garnier or Elizabeth Arden when I run out. I've also noticed that Neutrogena also works for me after they've phased out my L'Oreal. You can also use Estee Lauder or Clinique if you have a stretchable budget.  Even if you don't have any make-up remover, at least have a good facial cleanser to remove all the dirt, oil and anything that clogged your pores during the day. 

Tip:
Sometimes, when I don't use make-up the whole day, I just scrub my face with oatmeal instead of using facial cleansers. You can read the benefits of oatmeal as a scrub and how to use it by clicking on the link below:

STEP 3 USE FACIAL TONER
This step is optional. Skin experts say that using a toner is useless. Some say it actually minimizes the size of your pores. For me, I actually use it just to remove make up or dirt residue.  The only time I feel confident that my face is squeaky clean and ready for sleep is when I've seen my cotton ball clean after I've toned it. Also, it's also recommended that people with really oily skin use toner. 

Tip:
You can buy really cheap or expensive toners but so far, Neutrogena is the best and safest I've tried since it's alcohol-free.

STEP 4 MOISTURIZE/PROTECT YOUR SKIN BY APPLYING NIGHT CREAMS

When I was in high school, my mother, sister and I had our own dermatologist. Even before Belo, our "derma" was already popular with local celebrities and would even go to their houses to check up on them. She formulated a skin care regimen/products for us and I've used it until the end of high school while my mother and sister still use these products today. Fortunately, by the time I got to university my skin had already cleared up and I don't usually get any breakouts or problems except when I have my period where I get one unwelcome zit. My biggest skin problem even as a kid are my freckles which are a bit easy to hide in photos with good lighting, like the one above. Yes, I have had them on my cheekbones ever since I was in grade school or maybe, I've had them longer and I just noticed them when I was around 9. We had them checked out and it was confirmed. It's not that I'm super tisay, it's genetic apparently. 
Anyway, you don't have to spend a lot going to dermatologists to have great skin. You can use what's available on the market but always, always try different products that would work best for your skin type. These products may be cheap or super expensive but as long as it's effective, stick with them once you've found the right ones.

I'm still in the process of searching for my perfect night cream. I've used products from my derma, Estee Lauder, Olay (which was surprisingly terrible on me. I've only used it once!), La Mer, Clinique, Elizabeth Arden, Celeteque (my moisturizer staple esp on the plane and when I traveled around Europe during Autumn--really hydrated my skin!) and I forgot the others.  I'm currently using Nivea and so far, it's okay. I'm just finishing the jar which I must say, holds a lot. 

Tip:
Use masks once in a while. I use Elizabeth Arden mask every month to clear my pores.
Don't forget your eye cream or your eye roll-on. Garnier Light Brightening Eye Roll-On is really good for the eyes. The eye area is very sensitive and is usually the first ones to show signs of aging so you really have to start taking care of them, pronto!

So, like a sword needs a whetstone, your skin needs a daily regimen to keep it glowing, healthy and young. With our fast paced lives, it’s difficult to maintain a healthy routine to cleanse and repair our skin. As we’re still quite young, with nary a wrinkle in sight, it’s often easier to forget about a daily regimen or even just skip one step in the process. However, the regular process of cleansing, toning, moisturizing and exfoliating isn’t just about unclogging pores, removing makeup, sunscreen and dirt; it is the first and most important step for a lifetime of healthy and youthful looking skin. So start cleaning up while you’re young, drink lots of water, have a healthy lifestyle and get plenty of sleep. Phew.

This is the affordable version of a skin care regimen, I might order new products/set from Korea soon.
